One of our office workers has a magnet above her desk that says, “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning how to dance in the rain.” As I sat in my office yesterday, unable to see out the window because of the rain and watching the lightening. listening to the thunder, it occurred to me how much truth there was in this statement. It also struck me that sometimes we think a storm is coming, and it misses us. But sometimes we think it is about to pass and it just hangs on and on.
The storms in our lives make me think of our clients. When something bad or difficult happens, it creates an upheaval in our lives, much like a major storm. It can make us hide, or cry, or feel like the world is crashing down. It can make us come screeching to a halt and lose our direction. It can feel like there is no end in sight. For some of our clients, their wholes lives seem like one storm after another.
It is our job, then, to help our clients also see that storms bring life-giving rain. They can give us time to pause and even bring us new energy. Storms can make us change our course, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing. Maybe we are on the wrong road, after all. Storms even bring rainbows, when combined with the sun.
If we could just remember that life isn’t about waiting for those turbulent times to pass, but is rather about how we navigate through them that matters. If we could just learn to dance and sing and welcome those storms, even as we are bracing for them. If we could not be so attached to where we think we are going, and instead be willing to move with the storms, engage them even. What a different world it would be.
