April is Child Abuse Awareness month. Franklin County Child Protective Services gets 30,000 calls a year reporting child abuse or neglect. Three million children are victims of child abuse annually in the United States, with three children dying every day because of child abuse.
PBJ Connections is passionate about helping families so that child abuse and neglect is minimized. Children are more likely to suffer abuse when they are living in homes where there is divorce; homes where parents are very stressed; homes where there are very little external supports. Children are also more likely to suffer abuse when they are acting out behaviorally or struggling with a mental health diagnoses.
Often, coping skills and communication are key to helping families manage stressful situations and stressful behaviors, while creating more openness and cohesiveness within the family unit.
Please do not hesitate to contact your county’s child protective services if you even suspect that a child is being abused or neglected. Child protective services can link families to services, like PBJ Connections, to help them function better and to help that child maintain himself or herself in the home.
